Case Studies - Halton Housing Trust: Underpinning in Widnes

Recently we have underpinned a property in Widnes for Halton Housing Trust that was much more than just installing piles.

We have recently been the piling contractor designated to underpin a property in Widnes that had suffered from subsidence throughout the entire building. Extensive cracking could be seen to both external and internal walls and the original concrete floors were far from level.

The proposed solution to this was to install a piled underpinning slab to the whole of the ground floor area effectively supporting the building and creating a new level floor downstarirs.

Grundomat mini piles were chosen for this contract due to the minimal headroom and working area inside the property.

A total of 23no. 150mm diameter mini piles were driven using the Grundomat to depths of up to 5.5 metres. An edge beam sat on top of these piles with 450mm nibs broken into the existing wall. Spanning across the beams a 175mm thick reinforced slab was installed to create the base for the new ground floor.

Part of our works also included the finishing of the floor with insulation, a 100mm thick screed and finally an asphalt finish.

The images below show the slab, gas membrane, insulation and asphalt finish to the floor.

In addition to the construction of the floor we have also carried out replastering, repointing and removal and replacement of the kitchen and staircase.
