Case Studies - Ivy Green Rd, Chorlton: Underpinning Slab
During December 2005 we were asked to provide a solution to a problem at a house in Chorlton, Manchester. The property was being refurbished but had suffered a degree of movement in most of it's walls.
The answer to this was to install a piled underpinning slab throughout the whole of the building. This would create a reinforced concrete slab across the whole ground floor and pick up the wall loads by breaking nibs into the brickwork.
Because of the lack of room into the house the 37no. piles required were installed using the Grundomat piling hammer.
Once all the piles were installed, nibs or pockets were then broken into the walls. Two layers of mesh were layed across the floor and bent reinforced bars fixed and placed into the broken out pockets.
Once all the steel had been installed and inspected by the local building control officer concrete was then poured to form the slab.
